IPPV with BVM Flashcards
What indications are listed for IPPV with a BVM? (2)
- Apnoea or significant hypoventilation.
2. Ventilation of adult patients with cardiac output should generally include the use of PEEP.
What contraindications are listed for IPPV with a BVM? (1)
- PEEP valves are contraindicated for paediatric patients and cardiac arrests
What precautions are listed for IPPV with a BVM?
None.
What are the appropriate positions to BVM a pt in?
- Supine
- Stable side position
- Sitting (if pt in respiratory distress)
Should a triple airway manoeuvre be performed prior to BVM?
Yes.
What airway adjunct could be considered in the first instance if the pt requires BVM?
OPA, if indicated.
What is the minimum flow rate of O2 to BVM a pt?
> 8L min.
Describe the technique used for gripping a BVM mask to a patients face.
CW grip - thumb and pointer pressing down on mask, 3rd, 4th and 5th fingers gripping along jaw.
Why should extra care be taken when gripping a child’s face to BVM?
Soft tissues under the chin are easily compressed if gripped which may cause airway compromise.
If inadequate seal using 1 handed technique, then?
Use 2 handed grip, using fingers along angle of mandible to apply jaw thrust - ask other person to squeeze bag.
