Origin of immune cells Flashcards
Where are all immune cells created and matured?
In primary lymphoid tissues where they are produced from haematopoietic stem cells.
What happens once immune cells mature?
They leave the primary lymphoid tissues and enter the circulatory system.
What can lymphocytes and some mononuclear phagocytes do?
They can recirculate between non-lymphoid tissues and secondary lymphoid tissues. This increases the likelihood that they will be exposed to pathogens picked up in tissue all over the body.
What are the components of the primary lymphoid tissue?
Bone marrow and thymus.
What are the components of the secondary lymphoid tissue?
Adenoid, tonsil, lymph node, spleen, appendix and Peyer’s patch in small intestine.
