Where are Peyer’s patches located?
In the mucosa throughout the small intestine, particularly in the ileum.
What are Peyer’s patches?
Specialised lymphoid tissues for collecting antigen present in the GI tract.
What do Peyer’s patches comprise of?
Primary and secondary follicles located immediately beneath specialist epithelium known as follicular-associated epithelium. (or M-epithelial cells). They have T-zones which lie more deeply.
What is the appendix?
Its part of the large intestine, associated with the caecum and thought to have a role in the immune system.
How is the appendix similar to the tonsils?
They both have crypts, and like the tonsils, it is susceptible to infection.
