What is the heirachal structure in the OMHS units?

What the the OMS unit manage?
Pts in RAH:
-Trauma, cancer, orthognathic, pathology
Consultations in outpatients at ADH:
-Complex dental and medical problems
Electives:
-Minor dentoalveolar surgery, day stay and elective surgery
Extraction clinic
Research
Training of advanced trainees
Training of undergrads
What are the roles of undergards?
- Listen, observe, learn
- Respect pt’s privacy and confidentiality
- Follow instructions
- Strict dress code
- Attendance is a privilege, not a right
- With every right there is responsibility
When are ward rounds held for students?
- Monday to Friday, but can attend on weekend with prior arrangement
- Half in morning, half in evening
- Has priority over any 8:30 lecture commitments
- All students must be in Clinic by 9am sharp
- Friday pm evening ward round
- Attendance mandatory
- Week reviewed + knowledge tested
What should you seek to learn in ward rounds?
Learn in detail:
- Why patient is at the hospital
- Pt’s operations
- MHx
- Vital signs
- Medications
- Look at imaging studies
- If not understand, seek guidance from registrars
- If not getting help from registrars, report to Dr Paul Sambrook
What occurs at meetings and when is it?
- Monday or Tuesday (FIND OUT FROM REGISTRARS)
- Attendance mandatory
- All major hospital admissions, emergency cases, complex cases for past and current week presented and discussed
- Purpose for consultants and registrars to communicate
- Undergrads can find out what is happening and can view care management + x-rays
What is learnt at extraction clinics?
- covered by 2 students at all times
- Hands on minor surgery
- Treatment planning, review of radiographs
- LA technique and manageement of medically compromised patients
What happens in consultant sessions?
- Assist staff in diagnosis and management of oral medicine and surgical cases
- Attend regularly, listen and look
- Pay attention to whole patient, not just teeth
- Do not hover at doors
- Do not read patient’s case notes unless told to, and even then do not read them in front of patient
- Be careful at looking at referral cases as may get wrong idea since person referring is doing so because they don’t know what is happening
What happens in elective surgical sessions?
- Assist staff in surgical removal of teeth
- Improve knowledge of infection control, LA, minor surgical techniques
What is expected in the case report?
- Review in detail pre-op, operative, post-op course of patient
- One student to one patient, no duplicates
Patient must be inpatient and either:
-Dentoalveolar case in medically compromised patient
OR
-Major surgical case
- Typed up, at least 6 pages long
- Emphasis on pre and post op aspects rather than operation
How do you obtain access to patient’s records for case report?
- Complete RAH medical records request form
- Have RN, registrar or Head of OMS sign form before taking it to Royal Adelaide Hospital Medical Records Department
- Can not remove medical records from RAH, can not photograph or photocopy
- However can read, write notes and learn
How are clincal record cards managed? What are they?
Records of student’s clinical experience
- Issued by Senior Dental Assistant of OMS Clinic
- At end of each sessions should be filled in and presented to tutor for signature
- At end of rotation should be completed and returned to senior DA in OMS clinic
-If go to any other hospital or general dental clinic should maintain records for surgical and hospital experience
