What should be considered when assessing a patient’s medical fitness? What can impact on their fitness?
What procedure is being undertaken
-e.g. almost every patient is fit for tooth polishing, but greater demand on them if full clearance and major surgical jaw correction
Can be altered by:
- Skill and expertise of the staff
- Length of tie
- Preparation of the patient
What are the steps to formulating a plan for the patient’s treatment?
Gather facts
- History
- Exam
- Special Tests
- Extra info
- Differential diagnosis
- Localisation of important objects from info gathered

Plan steps to accomplish procedure
- Pre op
- Operative (including outlining any potential operative problems + management of problems)
- Post op
- Plan from beginning, don’t just start and see what happens
- Note that this is also one of the essential aspects of minimising trauma along with being gentle and knowing the aim of the procedure
What methods are there for localising an object?
- Inspection
- Palpation
- Special tests (e.g. radiographs)
What requirements are there for adequate radiographs in localising an object? What should you do with the radiograph once it has been taken?
Adequate view
-Correct view that covers complete area and accurate location
Good balance of definition and contrast
After taking:
Evaluate radiograph for:
-Position and depth of object of interest (may require more than one film)
-Tooth crown and root shape (if related to tooth)
-Presence of any pathology
-Relationship of object to vital structures
