organs of the urinary system Flashcards
organs of the urinary system
1) Kidneys
2) Ureters
3) Urinary bladder
4) Urethra
Ureters
carry urine from kidneys to the urinary system
Urinary bladder
stores urine from the kidneys to the urinary bladder
bladder wall expands as urine enters
mucosal folds act as valves to prevent backflow, and urine exits via internal and external sphincters (skeletal muscles)
Incontinence
involuntary loss of urine
caused by pregnancy, enlarged prostate, nervous system disease, or muscle tone loss
Urethra
small tube extracts from urinary bladder to the external opening
removes urine from body
urethra in females
reproductive and urinary system are not connected
urethra in males
carries urine during urination and semen during ejaculation
Urination (peeing)
stretch receptors send signals to spinal cord
Motor nerve impulse from spinal cord cause urinary bladder to contract and the sphincters to relax
controlled reflex
