Organs of the Urinary System Flashcards
5 organs of the Urinary System
> Kidneys
> Renal pelvis
> Ureters
> Urinary bladder
> Urethra
Filters blood to remove waste products & excess water, and are excreted as urine.
Helps body maintain proper level of fluid;
Produces hormones that controls blood pressure and make red blood cells;
Activates vitamin D to maintain health bones
Kidneys
A “funnel-shaped area inside each kidney” that is surrounded by the renal cortex and medulla, “it where newly formed urine from the nephron collects” before it flows to the ureters.
Renal pelvis
Two narrow tubes, 10-12 inches long each, that “transports urine from kidney to bladder”
(Urine drains from the ureters > bladder > ureteral orifices > the wall of urinary bladder)
Ureters
A “oval, hollow, muscular organ” that is a reservoir or source for urine, lined with rugae which expand it when full and contract when empty
Located: anterior portion (front) of the pelvic cavity, behind the pubic symphysis
Urinary bladder
A tube that extends from bladder to exterior of the body
Urethra
1.5 inch long that only transports urine
Female urethra
8 inch long, carries both urine and semen
Male urethra
Microscopical functional units of each kidney where urine is produced
Nephrons
aka “voiding or micturition”.
Is the normal process of excreting urine.
Occurs when pressure is placed on the base of the urethra causing to urinate or micturate.
It requires coordinated contraction of bladder muscle and relaxation of sphincter.
