Organophosphate Incesticide Poisoning Flashcards
1
Q
Organophosphate inhibit acetylcholinesterase.
You can remember the features using the mnemonic SLUDGEM. (SLUDGEM SYNDROME)
A
- Salivation
- Lacrimation
- Urination
- Defecation/diarrhoea
- Gastrointestinal upset - diarrhoea
- Emesis - Vomiting
- M - Myosis/Muscle spasm
Other features: hypotension, bradycardia, miosis, muscle fasciculations.
2
Q
How is it managed?
A
Atropine
3
Q
What part of the nervous system massively overfires with the ingestion of organophosphates?
A
The parasympathetic.
4
Q
What nerve gas is an organophosphate and describe the natural history of someone reacting to it?
A
Sarin Gas
- Initial symptoms = runny nose, tightness in the chest and constriction of the pupils.
- Then, difficulty breathing and experiences nausea and drooling.
- Loss of control of bodily functions, the victim vomits, defecates and urinates.
- Twitching and jerking.
- Ultimately, the victim becomes comatose and suffocates in a series of convulsive spasms.
5
Q
Organophosphates stop acetylcholinesterase from working.
What drugs are used in dementia to stop acetylcholinesterase from breaking down acetylcholine?
A
Rivastigmine, Donepezil, Galantamine.
