Organization of natural Systems Vocab Flashcards
biotic factor
A living organism, such as a plant, animal, fungus, or bacterium that impacts the environment.
abiotic factor
A non-living part of the environment, such as sunlight, temperature, precipitation, or humidity
atmosphere
All the gases in the air that surround Earth
biosphere
All living organisms
geosphere
The interior and surface of the Earth, including rocks, continents, and the ocean floor.
hydrosphere
All saltwater and freshwater (including precipitation), underground water, and ice
Biomes
Regions defined by specific abiotic factors to which plants, animals, and other organisms are well-adapted.
Terrestrial biomes
Land-based biomes and are defined by their climate (temperature and precipitation)
Aquatic biomes
Water-based biomes and are defined by their water depth and salinity (saltiness of water)
microbiome
A group of microbes (such as bacteria) that naturally live on or within another organism
ecosystem
All living organisms in a particular area along with the non-living parts of that environment
microecosystems
Small, natural systems that includes soil, ponds and puddles, decaying logs, and tree cavities.
community
A group of different species that interact with one another within a specific area.
population
A group of individuals from the same species, living in the same general area.
