Organization of Living Things Flashcards
Anatomy
study of body structures
physiology
study of how structures of the body function
What is the organization of living things?
Atoms, molecules, organelles, cells, tissues, organs, organ systems, organism, populations, community, ecosystems, biomes
Atom
the smallest unit of matter; consists of 3 subatomic parts
Protons
Positive charge; located in nucleus; atomic number; atomic mass
Neutrons
no charge; located in nucleus; atomic mass; Helps stabilize the nucleus by blocking the repelling forces of the protons
Electrons
negative charge; orbits the nucleus; responsible for chemical bonding
Isotopes
Atoms of the same element with a different # of neutrons.
Ions
Atoms that have gained or lost an electron
Anion
Negative ions
Cation
positive ions
Molecules
Formed by the bonding of atoms
Organelles
small structure in the cell that performs a function
Cell
The smallest unit of living matter
Eukaryotes
True nucleus; has a membrane and membrane-bound organelles;
Prokaryotes
No true nucleus; no membrane-bound organelles; single chromosome circular; monera (bacteria)
Tissues
groups of similar cells working together. 4 major types
Connective Tissue
Joins things; ex - blood, bone
Epithelial Tissue
covering; ex - skin
Muscle Tissue
Contracts
Nervous Tissue
controls
Organ
groups of tissues working together
Organ System
groups of organs working together
Organism
An individual living thing, made up of organ systems
