Medical Imaging Flashcards
X-Ray
Images formed when X-Rays are directed at a particular part of the body. A photographic film plate is placed behind the structure to be x-rayed. The x-ray beam can not penetrate dense structures but passes through hollow structures
CT Scan
a series of x-ray’s are taken providing slices of the body. Advantage: avoids overlapping structures, avoids exploratory
Ultrasound
Sends out a series of soundwaves (high frequency); When soundwaves hit solid structures they bounce back and are used to form an image.
MRI
Body is subjected to high powered magnetic fields; the magnetic field causes the hydrogen electrons to spin rapidly. Soft tissues can be seen and dense objects doesn’t obscure image
PET scan
Radioactive isotopes of oxygen are sent into the body. Radiation is released into places of high metabolism. Brain is the highest point of metabolism.
What does PET stand for?
Positron Emission Tomography
What does MRI stand for?
Magnetic resonance imaging
What does CT stand for?
Computerized Tomography
What is an image produced by an ultrasound called?
Picture is called a sonogram
