Organism Interactions (L2) Flashcards
What are environmental interactions between?
Environmental interactions happen between biotic and abiotic factors.
What types of interactions exist between biotic factors?
Symbiosis, competition and predation.
What types of relationships exist under ‘symbiosis’?
Mutualism, commensalism and parasitism.
What is the definition of competition?
This means two organisms compete with one another for a resource (fx. two deers for a mate, two lions for a deer or status etc.)
What is the definition of predation?
One animal eats another (predator eats prey).
What is the definition of mutualism?
Mutualism is when both organisms benefit.
What is the definition of commensalism?
Commensalism is when one organism benefits, whilst the other is unaffected.
What is the definition of parasitism?
Parasitism is when one organism benefits, whilst the other is harmed.
What is the definition of Symbiosis?
In symbiosis, two organisms have a close, long-term relationship.
Give me an example of mutualism!
Digestive bacteria + human, bees + flowers, sea anemones + clownfish etc.
Give me an example of commensalism!
Whale + barnacle, orchids + branches, sharks + remora fish.
Give me an example of parasitism!
Ticks + animals
