Food Chains and Web (L5) Flashcards

1
Q

Which way does the arrow point?

A

From the energy source. For example: The flea sucks blood from the rabbit who eats grass. Thus:
Grass - rabbit - fleas. The energy source stems from grass, gets passed on the rabbit and then the fleas.
IN A FOOD CHAIN, WE ALWAYS START WITH THE PRODUCER.

Q

Autotroph

A

An organism capable of synthesizing its own food from using light or chemical energy. For example, green plants, algae and certain bacteria.

Q

Food chain

A

Shows how each living thing gets food and energy is passed from creature to creature. This begins with plantlife and ends with animal life.

16
Q

Why does the energy amount decrease at each food chain trophic level?

A

Energy decreases as it moves up trophic levels because energy is lost as metabolic heat when the organisms from one trophic level are consumed by organisms from the next level.

17
Q

What are 3 reasons why the amount of energy decreases at each food chain trophic level?

A
  1. Energy is used as metabolic heat energy
  2. Energy is used for life processes; moving, thinking, organ involuntary movements etc.
  3. Faeces/ remains are passed to decomposers
