Organisational Structure Flashcards
Hierarchy -tall/flat
.Big impact on structure
.number of levels of authority in organisation
.creates predictable systems
.distributes and rations power
Flat: only 1 level separates MD at top from employees at bottom
Tall: more levels from top to bottom don’t have control people directly
Span of control -wide/narrow
Wide span: .few levels in hierarchy .Fewer promotion opps .Communication is better .Less confusion in layers .De-layering Narrow: Most levels in hierachy Carreer steps Communication deteriorates Impacts on decision making
Departmentalisation :
Organising an organisation through departments
. Ensures that development of expertise specific to the political, social and culture needs of the region
. Customer departmentalisation
. Functional departmentalisation
. Location departmentalisation - good idea for large offices around the world
. Product departmentalisation
Work specialisation
. Allow a manager to take complex tasks and break down them down into smaller and precise task that individual workers can compete.
Precise task that individual workers can complete: allow every employee to be an expert to some degree
= because each employee is trained explicitly on how to best perform one small specific task
Chain of command :
. A system in a military or civil organisation by which instructions are passed from one person to another
Henri foyol (1841-1925)
The more clear cut the chain of command, the more effective the decision making process and greater the effiency
Formalised: high/low
.Official organisation of a business that is typical and hierarchical in nature
High: formalised jobs offer little discretion over what is to be done
Low: formalised action means fewer constraints on how employees do their work
Decentralised/ centralised
Centralised:the degree to which decision making is concentrated at a single point in the organisations
Decentralised: organisations in which decision making is pushed down to the manangers that are closest to the action.
