Organisational structure
Is the way in which a business is arranged to carry out its activities
Authority
Is the power to control situations or the decisions and actions of others
Responsibility
Is the duty to complete a task and to be accountable for your actions
Matrix organisational structure
Uses teams of employees with suitable skills drawn from across the normal departments to respond to the businesses needs
Intrapreneurship
Takes place when individuals come up with new ideas within their division or team or unit and follow them through
Empowerment
Is a series of actions designed to give employees greater control over their working lives
Levels of hierarchy
Refers to the number of layers of authority within tan organisation. ( number of layers between boss and starter employee )
Delayering
Is the reduction of levels of hierarchy within an organisational structure
Chain of command
Is the line of communication and authority existing within a business. ( shop floor employee - supervisor - manager etc )
Span of control
Is the number is subordinates directly responsible to a manager
Centralised
Is when decision making comes from one person of high authority within a business
Decentralised
Organisations give greater decision making power to employees further down the organisational structure
Labour productivity
Measures the relationship between the amount of labour used in production and the quantity of outputs of goods and services
Knowledge management
Is the process of identifying maintaining and effectively using an organisations resources of knowledge
Line managers
Have authority over specified people within the organisation
Staff managers
Have responsibility for support functions within the business such as information technology systems
Communication
Is the exchange of information between people
Feedback
Is a response to communication that may confirm receipt and comprehension
Effective communication
Occurs when info is passed on to other people or groups and feedback is received, confirming communication has been understood
Annual report
Is a comprehensive account of a company’s activities during the trading year that has just finished
One way communication
Takes place when info is passed within a single direction in the organisation with no feedback taking place
Two way communication
Exists when info is passed up the organisational structure as well as down it
Vertical communication
Is the exchange of info between individuals or groups who are at different levels within the organisation
Horizontal communication
Involves individuals or groups at the same levels of hierarchy within the business exchanging info
Teleworking
Is working from home or remotely while using technology to communicate with employers and colleagues
Formal communication
Is the exchange of information and ideas within and outside a business using official channels ( annual greeting meetings )
Informal communication
Is the exchange of info and ideas using unofficial channels
Contingency theory
Of leadership considers the context of leadership and the impact of the situation on the leaders success
Emotional intelligence
Is the capacity for recognising our own feelings and those of others for motivating ourselves and for managing emotions well in ourselves and in our relationships
Flexible workforces
Exists when business place less reliance upon permanent full time employee and make greater use of other forms of employment such as part time
Temporary workers
Have employment contracts that only exists for specific period of time ( 6 months )
Part time staff
Work less than a full time week for example 20 hours a week
Job sharing
Is a flexible form of working in which two people work part time to completer the work of one full time employee
Annualised hours
Operate when an employer states the number of hours employees must work over a whole year. ( Weekly hours can be varied)
Zero hour contract
Exists when an employer does not have to offer the employee any fixed hours of work and the employee does not have to accept the hours offered
Flexitime
Is a way of working which allows employees to fit their working hours around their individual circumstances
Shift working
Is an employment practice in which different groups of workers are employed at the same place of work but at different times of the day o ensure continuous production
Compresses working hours
Is an employment practice when someone normally works full time but in fewer than normal number of days per week
