Organisation: The Heart And Blood Vessles Flashcards
How many chambers does the heart have and what are their names
4 chambers
Right atrium
Right ventricle
Left atrium
Left ventricle
The heart pumps blood in a double circulatory system what does this mean
Blood flows in two circuits
Deoxygenated blood
Oxygenated blood
Describe the paths in which blood flows
Deoxygenated blood
Vena cava- right atrium- right ventricle- pulmonary artery- to the lungs where it picks up oxygen through gas exchange
Oxygenated blood
Pulmonary vein- left atrium- left ventricle- aorta- to the rest of the body
Arteries
Carry blood away from the heart
Have thick muscular walls
Walls also contain elastic fibres which allow the vessel to stretch and recoil
Both of these allow the artery to withstand high blood pressure
Veins
Blood pumped Towards the heart
Contains valances which prevent back flow of blood
The lumen is wide allowing low pressure blood to flow through
Capillaries
Flow very close to cells to allow substance exchange
Walls are one cell thick to provide a short diffusion pathway for faster exchange of substances
