Organisation: Diabetes Flashcards
Why is glucose important in the body
Glucose is required for respiration which produces energy for cells
What happens in the body is there is a low blood glucose concentration
Less glucose uptake by cells
So less respiration
Less energy produced for the cells
So body is tired
What is insulin
A hormone
Which gland produces insulin
Pancreas
What happens in the body when there is a high blood glucose concentration (3)
Pancreas detects the increase in blood glucose concentration
Insulin is released into the blood stream
Causes glucose molecules to be moved into liver and muscle cells where it is converted into glycogen to be stored
What happens when there is a decrease in blood glucose concentration
The glycogen is converted back into glucose and released into the blood stream
Causing the blood glucose concentration to return to to normal
What is type 1 diabetes
When the pancreas is unable to produce insulin causing high blood glucose concentrations
How does someone get type 1 diabetes
It is inherited
What is type 2 diabetes
When the body no longer responds to the insulin being produced by the pancreas causing blood glucose concentration to remain high
How can someone get type 2 diabetes
It is developed
One cause can be obesity
How is type 1 and 2 diabetes controlled
Through carbohydrate based diets
exercise
Losing weight
What is diabetes
The inability to control blood glucose levels with insulin
What happens to a person with diabetes after they have eaten a meal
Rapid increase of blood glucose concentration unless controlled with insulin
What are symptoms of type 1 diabetes
Urinating a lot
Drinking lots of water
Extreme tiredness
If left untreated what can happen to a person with diabetes
Damage to your heart, eye, feet and kidneys
