Outline balls research regarding streaming and the AC economy.
Through research in beachside comprehensive school, ball found that students who were in high streams were warmed up by being highly encouraged to achieve highly and follow academic courses of study. Whereas students in low streams found that they were cooled off and and encouraged to follow lower status vocational courses and consequently achieve lower levels of academic success.
Outline the concept of educational triage
Refers to battlefield triage whereby soldiers would be judged and separated into three categories: those who were likely to survive, those who might survive and those who would not survive. The more likely one was to survive the more treatment they receive. This concept applies to the education system as students are separated into those who are most likely to achieve 5 a-c grades, those who were on c/d borderline and those who do not have much hope of any achievement.
What was announced in 2011 in relegation to educational triage?
The government announced that those who have over 40% of pupils who do not achieve 5 c grades at gcse may risk being taken over by more successful head teachers of neighbouring schools in order to stop underachievement.
What’s the impact of students being placed in lower streams?
Have a more negative attitude towards school
Lower self esteem which leads to disengagement from school life
Often leads to working class vocations
