MARXIST ON EDUCATION Flashcards
Briefly outline the Marxist perspective on education
Marxists see the education system as a means of social control which encourages young people to conform to the capitalist regime and accept their social position. Through conformity, the patterns of wealth and power will remain the same.
Explain Althussers view on education
Althusser saw the main role of the education system as the reproduction of an efficient and obedient workforce. Thai required two things: the reproduction of the necessary technical skills and the reproduction of the capitalist ideology
What are ideological state apparatus and there purpose according to Althusser
Media and education are two examples of ideological state apparatus and are responsible for acting as the focal socialisation agents where the ruling class ideology can be communicated most efficiently
What does Pierre bourdiou regard the key role of the education system to be? And how is it achieved?
Justifying class inequalities and reproducing the class structure. He argues each class of people has their own habitus (set of values). The dominant class have the power to impose their habitus as they create the curriculum etc. Therefore, what we learn at school is not educational knowledge but is in fact the culture of the ruling class. Therefore, those from more affluent backgrounds are more likely to achieve due to their correlating culture between school and there home life.
Who proposed the correspondence theory?
Bowles and gintis
Briefly outline the correspondence theory
The correspondence theory emphasises education being controlled to serve the interests of capitalism. There is a correspondence between schooling and work. For example, the higherarchy of authority, a rewards system. This helps prepare the schooling population for work in a capitalist system
Outline the neo-Marxist approach
They agree that there is attempted cultural reproduction. however, the workingclass see through this. This is evidenced by working class ‘lads’ developing an anti school subculture.
