Organisation of DNA Flashcards
1
Q
What do prokaryotes contain?
A
A single circular chromosome and they can contain plasmids
2
Q
What do eukaryotes contain?
A
Linear chromosomes consisting of tightly coiled DNA wrapped around proteins found within the nucleus. Although some organelles, such as mitochondria and chloroplasts, also contain DNA as small circular chromosomes
3
Q
What are the 2 eukaryotes which contain plasmids?
A
Mitochondria and chloroplasts
4
Q
How is DNA arranged in linear chromosomes within eukaryotes?
A
The DNA is tightly coiled and packaged with associated proteins called histones.
