Organisation and the digestive system Flashcards
Hierarchy of living organisms
cells -> tissues -> organs -> organ systems -> organisms
What is a carbohydrate
composed of long chains of simple sugars e.g. glucose molecules
What is proteins
composed of chains of amino acids
What are fats composed of
3 fatty acids & 1 glycerol molecule
What are enzymes and what are their jobs
Enzymes are proteins. They speed up the rate of chemical reactions.
What is the active site
The active site is complementary to the shape of the substrate molecule
What happens when a substrate enters the active site of an enzyme
A substrate complex is formed
What happens when an enzyme substrate is formed
Bonds are broken
Produce are released.
Enzyme can then be reused.
How does an enzyme become denatured
Your body temperature has to go over the temperature of 40°c
