Blood, Heart, Breathing and Plant Transport Flashcards
How is oxygen carried around the body
Oxygen binds to haemoglobin (on red blood cells) forming
oxyhaemoglobin which is carried to all cells for respiration.
What is the function of white blood cells
To fight decease
Name the two types of white blood cells
Lymphocytes
Phagocytes
What does the phagocyte do
It engulfs pathogens and digests them
What do lymphocytes do
produce antibodies which attach the pathogen and destroy it.
What is the function of an artery
It transports oxygenated blood under high pressure away from the heart
except the pulmonary artery which transports deoxygenated blood to the lungs
What is the function of a vein
It transports deoxygenated blood to the heart
except the pulmonary vein which transports oxygenated blood into the left atrium
What is the function of a capillary
allow fast exchange/diffusion of substances out of the blood into the body cells/tissues.
Pathway of blood flow through the heart
Vena cava -> right atrium -> right ventricle -> pulmonary artery -> Pulmonary vein -> left atrium -> left ventricle -> aorta
What is the function of the aorta
pumps blood all around the body
What are the coronary arteries
these are the arteries that supply the heart muscle with oxygen
and glucose for respiration
