What is organisational structure?
Organisational structure refers to the levels of the management and the division of responsibilities within a business
What is the chain of command?
A chain of command is the structure in an organisation which allows instructions to be passed from senior management to lower levels of management
What are the most important features of an organisation chart?
- It is a hierarchy, so there are different levels, which have varying degrees of authority
- It is organised into departments, and each one has a particular responsibility
- A chain of command is present
What is the span of control?
The span of control is the number of subordinates working directly under a manager
What are the two types of chains of command?
- A tall/long chain of command
- A wide/short chain of command
What are the advantages/disadvantages of short chains of command?
+Quicker, accurate communication
+Top managers closer to workers, they keep in touch
+Each manger is the boss of more people. Therefore

–>Workers feel more trusted, more job satisfaction

- Line manager: Have direct control over subordinates
- Staff manager: Specialists who provide support, info and assistance to line managers

- Planning: Aims & targets for the future
- Organising: Tasks delegated to subordinates
- Coordinating: Bringing together resources & departments
- Commanding: Supervising, telling people what to do
- Controlling: Evaluating performance, disciplining workers
What is delegation?
Delegation means giving a subordinate the authority to perform particular tasks
What are the advantages of delegation for a manager?
- They get help in doing work
- They are less likely to make mistakes
- Success can be measured more easily
- Can focus on other stuff
What are the advantages of delegation for the employee?
- Work is more interesting and satisfying
- Employee feels trusted and happy
- Employees are trained and can be promoted faster
What are some disadvantages of delegation?
- The managers have less control over workers & work
- Subordinates may fail
- Manager could feel insecure
Why are effective managers important?
- They motivate/inspire employees
- They guide & advise employees
- They keep costs under control
- They increase profitability of the business

- Autocratic: Manager in charge, workers obey commands
- Democratic: Workers help make decisions
- Laissez-faire: Make objectives known, employees work
