Why do people work?
- To get money
- To feel important
- To feel like they’re part of a group
- Security(knowing you are safe)
- Job satisfaction(Enjoying the job)
What was F.W. Taylor’s motivational theory?
Pay workers more money, they do more work.
Criticisms of F.W. Taylor’s theory?
- Too simplistic(Money isn’t the only incentive)
- If the job provides no satisfaction, workers still won’t work better
- As employees’ wages are based on output, problems arise when output can’t be measured easily
What did Abraham Maslow propose?

What was Frederick Herzberg’s motivation theory?
He split up the needs of workers into two groups- Hygiene factors and Motivators. Hygiene factors needed to be satisfied first.
What did Herzberg’s Hygiene factors include?
These were the basic animal needs, like- status, security, work conditions, salary, relationship with others, wtc.
What did Herzberg’s motivators include?
Factors for psychological growth, like: recognition, achievement, promotion, the work.
Factors for motivating employees-
- Financial rewards(wages, salaries, etc.)
- Non-financial rewards(Health care, pension, perks, etc.)
- Job satisfation

-Need to be calculated weekly, expensive & time-consuming

+Easy to calculate money to be paid
- Clocking-in system needed
- Good and bad workers get paid the same
- Supervisors needed, expensive
Advantages & Disadvantages of piece rates?
+Workers encouraged to make more output
- Quality may be overlooked
- Workers who are careful won’t be paid as much as those who rush
- If machinery breaks, workers get less moolah.
Advantages & Disadvantages of salaries?
+Easy to calculate
-Extra work usually not paid for

Job satisfaction is the enjoyment derived from performing your job.
Ways to increase job satisfaction?
- Job rotation
- Job enlargement
- Job enrichment
- Teamworking
What is job rotation?
Job rotation involves swapping workers around and so they do a specific task for a only little while
What is job enlargement?
Job enlargement is when extra, similar tasks are added to the worker’s job description
What is job enrichment?
It involves adding tasks that require more skill/responsibility
