poor
foreign support deterred many commons from joining
overestimated their support
POG organisation
Very good
Aske managed more than 30,000 followers from all different backgrounds and geographical regions who were pursuing different objectives
Recruits put in groups according to their town or village, meant most of the men knew each other and were able to appoint a captain to represent and lead them
Villages usually elected on captain, towns as many as four.
Captains met each day - received instructions from Aske as to where they would be going, attended regular council meetings
Each recruit given a badge and a supply of food and wages
All recruits took pilgramicdge oath of good behaviour - most appear to have been well-disciplined
8000 rebels approaching York, Aske arranged that half would camp outside the city while the rest would accompany him, and all paid for their boarding and lodging
Aske had greater difficultly controlling rebels from the west of the Pennines - tension between gentry leaders and commoners
Lack of trust when commoners left behind when Asked and gentry leaders discussing demands with Duke of Norfolk - later proved to be correct
Western organisation
poor:
Animosity between Cornish and those from Devon
Tension between peasants, clergy and gentry - hints of social radicalism in Clyst camp outside Exeter
Kett organisation
Kett led a peaceful protest of 16,00 rebels for nearly seven weeks
Mousehold Heath - community occupied Surrey Place, a mansion on the Heath
Ran the camp like a model local government - one of his objectives to show that he and his colleagues could manage business adders as well as the gentry/ government officials
Each of 24 hundreds in the country that contributed rebels elected two governors to sit on an advisory council, courts of justice imposed disciplinary fees and punishments, and proclamations and warrants were issued
Promise of decent behaviour seems to be upheld
Kett sent out search parties to keep the camp supplied with with for and beer - negotiated with the Mayor of Norwich to purchase general provisions and gunpowder, and arranged for artillery to be bought from the coast
Twice a day prayers taken by Thomas Croynes (minister) under the Oak of Reformation
Discipline maintained when rebels attacked the city and held it for a week
Garrison established in the cathedral grounds
Aldermen and constables were appointed
Citizens conscripted as night watchmen
city gates, castle and guildhall guarded
No one was killed until royal troops and foreign mercenaries arrived to recover control of the city
Oxfordshire organisation
poor
Although appeared good - leaders spent a long time planning their moves and determining when and where it would take place
Secrecy not high on the agenda and a fair weather colleague alerted his lord of the intended rising
Rebels meeting at Enslow Hill made arrest predictable
Essex organisation
poor:
Lack of secrecy - advertised that he was going to do something dramatic - hired troupe of actors to perform Shakespeare’s Richard ll
Mistakenly thought sharif of London and mayor would support him
He had no exit strategy - found Ludgate blocked
