Organisation Flashcards
What are cells?
The basic building blocks of all living things.
What is a tissue?
A group of cells with a similar structure and function.
What is an organ?
A combination of tissues carrying out a specific function.
What is an organ system?
Organs working together within an organ system.
What is an organism?
Organ systems work together to form whole living organisms.
What is the order of organisation. (Bottom to Top).
Cell - Tissue - Organ - Organ system - Organism.
What indicator do you use to test for sugar?
Benedict’s reagent.
What indicator do you use to test for starch?
Iodine.
What indicator do you use to test for protein?
Biuret solution.
What indicator do you use to test for lipids? (Fat)
Sudan III
What is the colour change in the solution if sugar is present?
Change from blue/green to yellow/red.
What is the colour of the solution if starch is present?
Blue/black.
What is the colour change in the solution if protein is present?
Blue to pink/purple.
What is the colour of the solution if lipid is present?
Bright red.
What is the purpose of the digestive system?
To break down large molecules into smaller, soluble molecules which are then absorbed into the bloodstream.
What is an enzyme?
A biological catalyst that speeds up the rate of a reaction without being changed or used up.
What do enzymes do?
Lower the activation energy for the reaction to occur.
What do enzymes have?
An active site which the substrate fits in to.
What happens to enzymes in extreme pH or temperature?
The enzyme will denature.
What is produced in the liver?
Bile.
Where is bile stored?
The gall bladder.
What do pacemakers do?
Produce electrical impulses which stimulate the surrounding muscle to contract, squeezing the chambers of the heart and pumping the blood.
How is coronary heart disease caused in the body?
The main arteries which supply blood to the heart can become blocked due to the build up of fatty deposits.
What does the plasma do?
Transports different blood cells around the body.
