Organic Synthesis Rules Flashcards
Phenols and carbonates
Unlike carboxylic acids, phenols do not react with carbonates.
Nitriles and carbonyls
You can only add nitriles to carbonyl groups (aldehydes and ketones).
Prefered esterification method
Phenyl to phenyl esters, since carboxylic acids do not readily react.
Amine groups - acid and alkalis
Alkalis willl react with the COOH –> COO-, and acids will react with NH2 –> NH3+
reactants associated with electrophilic addition reactions
HCL, Cl2, HBr, Br
reactants associated with electrophilic substitution
NO2+, R+, RCO+, Cl+/Br+
reactants associated with nucleophilic addition (reduction of carbonyl)
CN-, H- (NaBH4) -
reactants associated with nucleophilic substitution
NH3, H20, OH-, CN-
