Organic molecules Flashcards
What is a zwitteron?
a substance that has a positive and negative group in it
how does an amino acid exist at equilibrium?
acidic- the NH3+ exist and CO2H exist
neutral- the NH3+ exist and CO2 exist
basic- the NH2exist and the CO2 exist
What is the isoelectric point?
this is the point where the amino acid is neutral, no net charge
PI = (pKa1 +pKa2)/2
above the isoelectric point the amino acid will be basic,
below it will be acidic
What is a polypeptide?
a polymers with 40 to 1000 amino alpha sequences
What are the different levels of protien structure?
Primary- sequence of amino acids
secondary - alpha helix or beta pleated sheets determined by H bonding. proline cannot participate it cannot hydrogen bond. it is found at the beginning and ent of proteins
tertiary- the folding of the protein. cysteine stabilizes the tertiary structure because of the disulfide bonds
quartenary structures- the structure of the interaction of two or more proteins
How do you classify sugars?
By the functional group aldehyde(aldose) or ketone(ketose)
or by the number of carbons 6(hexose) 5(pentose)
