amines Flashcards
What is the basic structure of amines?
how do yo name amines?
amines are nitrogen based groups. they are named by removing the -e on the corresponding alkane and adding amine.
they are also identified by how carbons that is attached to it (primary, secondary etc..)
R groups attched directly to the N is identified with an N for each group
Describe the basicity of amines.
Amine are weakly basic. the more electron withdrawing groups makes them less basic
the more electron donating groups makes the more basic. And good nucleophiles.
Can amines hydrogen bond?
Yes. this makes them have high boiling points.
low molecular weight amines is soluble in water. tertiary amines cannot hydrogen bond
What are some reactions of amines?
Amide formation - amines with carboxylic acids and derivatives
Alkylation - amines and alkyl halides
amines are good nucleophiles
