Organic Molecules Flashcards
Polymer
A large molecule made of many monomers bonded together.
AKA: A complete puzzle.
Monomer
Molecular subunit of a polymer.
AKA: the puzzle pieces of a polymer.
Carbohydrates
The monomers of carbohydrates are sugars. Carbohydrates are used to produce energy. (ATP)
Lipid
The monomer of lipids is fatty acids. Lipids Store energy, insulates(warmth), cell membrane(phospholipids), chemical messengers(steroids. Includes fats, oils, and waxes. Lipids are hydrophobic(water fearing)-do not dissolve in water.
Protein
A polymer made up of the monomer Amino acids. Makes up Keratin(what makes up our hair), insulin(regulates blood sugar), Enzymes, and hemoglobin(transports oxygen throughout the body, red blood cells). Are used for digestive purposes(salivary amylase), are builders(DNA polymerase). Also used in cell membrane to transport materials in/out of the cell.
Sugars
The monomers of carbohydrates.
Amino acids
The monomer of proteins. We get them from food. Used to build proteins.
Enzyme
What break down and build up molecules. Contain proteins.
Nucleic acids
Contain instructions to build proteins. Made up of the monomers nucleotides. Two different types, DNA and RNA. Nucleic acids work together to build proteins.
RNA
Helps build proteins.
DNA
Stores the information for putting amino acids together to make proteins.
Nucleotide
The monomers for nucleic acids.
Fatty Acids
The monomer of Lipids.
Why do Proteins denature?
Because of a change in temperature or PH level.
