Movement Of Molecules Across Cell Membrane Flashcards
Diffusion
The movement of molecules from an area of high concentration to an area on low concentration. Requires NO energy.(like a slide)
Concentration gradient
The difference of concentration of a substance in different locations.
Osmosis
Diffusion of WATER through a selectively permeable membrane(a membrane that only allows some materials to pass through it). Moves from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration. NO energy required(again like a slide). Focus on where the water goes
Isotonic
2 solutions of the same strength (amount) Think of this like goldilocks. Just the right amount of solute(what gets dissolved. Like sugar in sugar water)and solvent(what does the dissolving. Like the water in sugar water).
Hypertonic
High concentration, above strength(amount). (Too much solute)
Hypotonic
Too low concentration, below strength(amount).
Active transport
When molecules move across an area of low concentration to an area of high concentration. Requires energy(like climbing a slide). Needs a facilitator(transport proteins) to move the molecules.
Molarity
Moles per Liter of solution. The equation is moles of solute/volume of solution. To find moles of solute find molar mass of the chemical, for example O2 is 16 grams. Then you multiply this by 2 and get 32 grams, the molar mass of O2.
Facilitated Diffusion
Requires protein channel for molecules to cross the cell membrane. NO energy is required.
