ORGANIC: enzymes Flashcards
what are enzymes
large globular proteins , efficient biological catalysts
many reactions rely on enzymes, without them reactions would take to long to occur damaging the organisms
can combine with other reactants and the products of the reaction making most reaction reversible.
catalyst
something that helps speed up chemical reactions without itself being chemically changed.
intracellular enzymes
function from within within the cells (respiratory enzymes in the mitochondria)
extracellular enzymes
enzymes produced by cells and secreted to the outside where they take effect.
metabolic reactions enzymes
metabolic reactions all follow a step by step process through a series of small reactions called a metabolic pathway. ( stages of photosynthesis) enzymes are involved at each step one reaction has taken place the enzyme is released to be reused
how do enzymes work
have a specific shape. the specific site where the enzyme attaches to the substrate is called the active site (each one uniquely arranged) specific in its actions.
factors affecting enzyme reaction rate
ventured by excessive heat and change in pH.
temperature enzyme
only active within a certain range optimum temp (30-40)
pH enzymes
works best in limited pH range
