inorganic compounds Flashcards
what is an inorganic compound
does not contain carbon except co2, carbonate and carbonic acid. derived from the physical environment (minerals)
what are the inorganic compounds
water and minerals, fertilizers
water
70% of our bodies is water
H2O
universal solvent
liquid medium in which all chemical reactions can take place.
splits bonds of larger molecules into smaller molecules during digestion.
makes up most of blood plasma, carries waste products away from tissues.
waste products (urea, uric acid) dissolve in water = urine and sweat, excreted.
transports mineral salts in plants.
minerals
92 natural elements. only some needed for living organisms ( essential elements / nutrients)
nutrients
provide energy, build up new cells, keep body functioning properly.
2 types: macronutrients (large quantities)
micronutrients(small quantities)
use of fertilizers in over used soil
Na, K, Fe, I, N, Ph, occur in soil. inorganic nutrients are added to soil to improve pant growth. used to replace low levels of minerals. fertilisers contain nitrate phosphate sulphate and potassium.
eutrophication
fertilisers cause a pollution problem. fertilisers washed into streams, rivers and dams by run-off the build up of nutrients from dissolved substance encourages leg to grow. the algae grows so much it blocks out the light for other aquatic plants causing them to die and become bacteria food. bacteria use up O2 during respiration causing O2 levels to drop causing fish and amphibians to die.
