Organic Defenitions Flashcards
Displayed Formula
The relative positioning of atoms and bonds between them
Homologous Series
A series of organic compounds having the same functional group but with each successive member differing by CH2
Functional Group
The part of the organic molecule responsible for its chemical reactions
Hydrocarbon
A compound containing hydrogen and carbon atoms only
Saturated
Single carbon-carbon Bon only
Unsaturated
The presence of multiple carbon-carbon bonds, such as c=c
Alicyclic
An aliphatic compound arranged in non-aromatic rings with or without side chains
Aromatic
A compound containing a benzene ring
Aliphatic
A compound containing carbon and hydrogen joined together in straight chains or non-aromatic rings
General Formula
The simplest algebraic formula of a member of a homologous series
Homolytic fission
Each of the bonded atoms takes one of the shared pair of electrons, creating 2 radicals
Heterolytic fission
One of the bonded atoms takes both of the electrons from the pair.
Electrophile
An atom which is attracted to an electron-rich centre or atom, where it accepts a pair of electrons to form a new covalent bond
Nuclelophile
An atom which is attracted to an electron-deficient centre or atom, where it donates a pair of electrons to form a new covalent bond
Structural Isomer
Same molecular formula but different structural formula
