Organic Compounds - Proteins Flashcards
What are proteins
A macromolecule with many functions. Acts as enzymes, vital structure roles, function in body defenses, allows cells to communicate, make muscle contract. Body produced 50k-100k of protein, 20% of body mass.
Amino Acid
Monomer of proteins - consisting of carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, and nitrogen atoms.
What are Peptides
A polymer consisting of two or more amino acids joined by a peptide bond via dehydration synthesis.
Protein structures
fibrous protein strand composed of mostly non polar amino acids . Found in hair, nails, tendons, bone.
The building blocks of proteins are amino acids, which are small organic molecules that consist of an alpha (central) carbon atom linked to an amino group, a carboxyl group, a hydrogen atom, and a variable component called a side chain (see below). Within a protein, multiple amino acids are linked together by peptide bonds, thereby forming a long chain
Globular proteins
the polypeptide chain assemble into a globe or roughly a spherical shape. Most are polar and functions: enzymes, hormones,
