Organic Compounds - Lipids Flashcards
Define Lipids
Lipids are non polar organic compound that contains carbon, hydrogen and oxygen atoms.
Molecular formula C15H31COOH
Non polar- hydrophobic
High ratio of hydrogen to oxygen
What do lipids do for other nonpolar compounds?
Acts like a solvent.
What is a basic monomer in lipids?
Fatty Acids
What is a fatty acid?
Fatty acids are a lipid with hydrocarbon chains bound to a Carboxylic Acid group (COOH).
Can have 4-20 more carbon atoms.
Define the structure of Saturated fatty acids
Saturated fatty acids don’t have any double bonds between any of its carbon atoms,. Carbon atoms are more saturated with hydrogen atoms. Found in ANIMAL fats.
Define the structure for Monosaturated fatty acids
Monosaturated fatty acids have double bond between two carbons in its hydrocarbon chain, causes it to bend. (can’t pack together as tightly lower melting point.)
Polyunsaturacted fatty acids
2 or more double bonds between carbon atoms. Lowest melting point.
Triglycerides
A lipid consisting of other hydrocarbon rings attached to chemical groups.
What are Steroids’
A lipid consisting of other 4 hy
