Organic Chemistry lll Flashcards
if a substance is polar what does it mean?
it dissolves in water
What is the valence for carbon
4
What is the simplest amino acid and why?
Glycine because it side chain is Hydrogen
What does it mean for a substance to be nonpolar
Does not dissolve in water
What is a peptide bond?
Bond that connects amino acids
Differentiate between glycosidic and peptide bonds
Glycosidic connect sugars whereas peptide bonds connect amino acids
Differtiate between a chiral molecule and an anomeric carbon
Chiral molecules have 4 different atoms attached to it, anomeric molecules are molecules where cyclization begins
Differentiate between alpha and beta d glucose
Alpha d glucose has a hydroxyl group attached to the anomeric carbon pointing downwards wherea the hydroxyl group in beta is pointing upwards
What’s a c4 primer?
Isomer where hydroxyl group is on the 4th carbon
What is lactose made of?
Glucose and galactose
What’s the type of bond in lactose?
1-4 beta glycosidic bond
What is a reducing sugar
A reducing sugar is any sugar that is capable of acting as a reducing agent because it has a free aldehyde group or a free ketone group.
Name some basic amino acids
Histidine, lysine, arginine
Name some nonpolar amino acids
Glycine Alanine Valine Leucine Isoleucine Phenylanine Tryptophan Methionine Proline
Acidic amino acids
