Organic chemistry ll (functional groups) Flashcards
List functional groups
Alcohols Amines Amides Carboxylic acid Aldehydes Ketones Ethers Esters
Where are alcohols found?
Found in anywhere fermented, like yoghurt
How do we name alcohol
By putting -ol at the end of the name, adding di or tri before -ol depending on the amount of (-OH) in the structure + its number at the beginning
What are ethers?
Two primary alcohols put together, this removes h2o and makes ether
Types of alcohol and draw them
Primary, secondary and tertiary
Differentiate between aldehyde and ketones
Aldehydes contain a carbonyl group in the end of the chain whereas ketones have them in the middle (C=O)
What’s the similarity between aldehyde and ketones
They both contain carbonyl groups (-CHO)
Examples of carboxylic acid irl
Citric acid in lemons
Carbonic acids in. Sodas
Formic acids in ants
Ether real life function?
Anesthetic
Esters functional group
R-CO-O-R
What is ester?
Derivative of a carboxylic avid in which carboxyl hydrogen is replaced by a carbon grouip[
Example of ester?
Ethyl acetate, used in ripening fruit very aromatic
Amines
Contain an amino group
Amines functional group?
R-NH-R
Amines example irl
In fish, very bad smells
