Introduction To Fats Flashcards
What are lips?
Heterogenous groups of compounds including fats, oils, steroids
What are the properties of lipids
Insoluble in water
Soluble in nonpolar solvents
Differentiate between simple lipids and complex lipids
Esters of fatty acids with alcohol are simple lipids whereas cpomplex lipids are the same except that gtroups other than fatty acids and alcohol are added
Types of simple lipids?
Fats and waxes
Types of complex lipids
Phospholipids and glycolipids
What are the 3 types of lipids?
Simple, complex and derived
What are precursor and derived lipids?
Fatty acids, glycerol, steroids, alcohols, fatty aldehydes, ketones bodies, hydrocarbons
How are fatty acids classified?
Bylength and saturation
List fatty acid lengths
Short are less than 6 carbons
Medium are 6-12 carbons
Long are more than or equal to 14 carbons
What is saturation?
Amoun of hydrogen bounded to carbon
List 3 classification of fatty acids saturation wise
Saturate
Monounsaturated
Polyunsaturated
Whats a saturated fatty acid
A fatty acids with all its carbons blinded to hydrogen with all single bonds
Mufa?
Fatty acid which lacks a hydrogen so its carbon makes a double. Bond with another carbon
Pufa?
More than one double bond between carbons
What’s a triglycerides?
Composed of a glycerol backbone and three fatty acids
