Organic Chemistry Flashcards
How is carbon related to organic compounds
Carbon is found in all organic molecules
All organic compounds have 4 strong covalent bonds
What’s an alkane compound
A single carbon bond
(C-C) such as ethane, methane, propane and butane
What’s an Alkene compound
A double bond of carbon (C=C) such are ethene, methene, propene and butene
What’s an alcohol compound
And oxygen + hydrogen bond (O-H) such as methanol, ethol, propel and butol
What a carboxylic acid compound
A carbon bonded with 2 oxygen and one hydrogen (-COOH) such as propanoid acid
What’s an anime compound
A bond with a nitrogen and 2 hydrogen’s (N-H-H) such as butanamine
What is an isomer
They are compounds that have the same molecular formula but different structures
What is a saturated organic compound
Organic compounds that contain only carbon to carbon single bonds
What is unsaturated organic compound
Organic compounds and hat contain carbon to carbon double or triple bonds
What is a hydrocarbon compound
A compound that only contains hydrogen and carbon bonds
What does it mean if a compound begins with “meth”?
That there is only 1 carbon atoms in the molecule
What does it mean if a compound begins with “eth”
It means there are 2 carbon atoms in the molecule
What does it mean if the compound begins with “prop”
It means there are 3 carbon atoms in the molecule
What’s does it mean if a compound begins with “but”
That there are 4 carbon atoms in the molecule
