Acids, Bases, pH And Buffers Flashcards
What does an acid do in aqueous solution?
They donate hydrogen ions and protons
What’s the difference between a strong and weak acid?
The stronger the acid the more ionised H+ ions are released which in turn makes the pH number lower
A weak acid has less ionised H+ ions in the solution therefore a higher pH number
What does a base do?
They accept H+ ions and produce OH- in aqueous solutions
What’s neutralisation?
When a weak acid and weak base react to produce a salt and water
What’s the normal pH level of blood
7.35-7.45
What is the function of a buffer?
To try maintain a constant pH level in different body fluids
What is the function of the bicarbonate/carbonic acid buffer in the blood?
To stop the alkalosis and acidosis in the blood
