Organic Chemistry Flashcards
What is fractional distillation?
Tower with several condensers coming off at different heights (hot at bottom, cool at top).
Sequence = heating, evaporating, cooling, condensing, catalytic cracking
What is organic chemistry?
The chemistry of carbon and carbon-based compounds
What is catalytic cracking?
Breaking large hydrocarbons into smaller useful hydrocarbons
What can hydrocarbons be divided into?
Aliphatic and aromatic
What are aromatic hydrocarbons?
Based on benzene structure
What can aliphatic hydrocarbons be divided into?
Alkanes, Alkenes, Alkynes
What are Alkanes? Saturated or unsaturated?
Single bonds. Saturated.
What are Alkenes? Saturated or unsaturated?
Double bonds. Unsaturated
What are Alkynes? Saturated or unsaturated?
Triple bonds. Unsaturated
What are geometric isomers?
Compounds with the same molecular formula but have different spatial arrangements of the atoms. Apply to organic compounds with a double bond. They differ in physical and chemical properties despite the fact they have the same molecular formula.
What is a cis isomer?
Substituents on the same side of the double bond
What is a trans isomer?
Substituents on opposite sides of the double bond
