Q

What is and acid/base indicator?

A

Dyes that can be added in small amounts that will change colour in the presence of an acid or base. Some indicators only work in a specific range of pH.

Q

What is pH?

A

A measure of the concentration of hydronium ions in solution. High concentration = low pH. pH meter tests the voltage of the electrolyte, converts voltage into pH.

11
Q

What are the limitations to Arrhenius acids and bases?

A

Acid is expected to be an acid in any solvent.
Salt produced on neutralization reaction can effect pH.
H+ is actually H3O+.
Not all bases have hydroxide.

Q

What is amphoteric?

A

A substance that can act as an acid or base

16
Q

In titrations what is the standard?

A

Known concentration

17
Q

What is the equivalence point?

A

Hydroxide ion = hydronium ion

18
Q

What is the end point?

A

When the indicator changes colour, should be at equivalence point

19
Q

What is hydrolysis?

A

When water is a reactant

20
Q

What is salt hydrolysis?

A

Salt that reacts with water to produce and acidic or basic solution
