Q

What is the separation of crude oil?

A
  1. Crude oil is separated by fractional distillation
  2. Using heat
  3. To separate fractions, which are mainly alkanes
  4. As fractions move up the tower, they condense from gas back to liquid
  5. Liquids form at different levels because they have different boiling points
  6. Therefore, the liquids can be collected separately e.g. petrol
  7. The fractions at top condense at lower temperature than fractions lower down

Q

What is the greenhouse effect?

A

Carbon dioxide produced from combustion builds up in atmosphere, forming layer around earth. When radiation from sun hits earth, some of it is absorbed and some is reflected back into atmosphere. The blanket of carbon dioxide prevents it from escaping and earth heats up (global warming). Carbon dioxide not only greenhouse gas, others include methane and water vapour.

16
Q

How do we reduce global warming?

A

Burn less fossil fuels
Plant more trees
Reduce deforestation
More energy efficiency

17
Q

How are polymers made?

A

When many monomers join together chemically to produce very long chain process known as addition polymerisation

18
Q

What is addition polymerisation? Examples?

A
Monomer has to have double bond between two carbons, more monomers added, 2 examples of addition polymers are:
Polythene
Polyvinyl chloride (PVC)
