Organic Chemistry Flashcards
What substances are in alkenes?
Methane
Ethane
Propane
Butane
What state are the alkenes at room temperature?
Gas
What do alkenes have bond wise?
One double covalent bond
How is crude oil formed?
From plants and animals that died millions of years ago pressure and heat turned them into crude oil
What is the reaction of alkenes and alkanes?
Burn in oxygen to produce carbon dioxide
What is methane’s molecular formula?
CH4
What is ethane’s molecular formula?
C2H6
What is the molecular formula of butane?
C4H10
What is propane’s molecular formula?
C3H8
What is the separation of crude oil?
- Crude oil is separated by fractional distillation
- Using heat
- To separate fractions, which are mainly alkanes
- As fractions move up the tower, they condense from gas back to liquid
- Liquids form at different levels because they have different boiling points
- Therefore, the liquids can be collected separately e.g. petrol
- The fractions at top condense at lower temperature than fractions lower down
What is ethene’s molecular formula?
C2H4
What is molecular formula of propene?
C3H6
What is molecular formula of butene?
C4H8
What is the greenhouse effect?
Carbon dioxide produced from combustion builds up in atmosphere, forming layer around earth. When radiation from sun hits earth, some of it is absorbed and some is reflected back into atmosphere. The blanket of carbon dioxide prevents it from escaping and earth heats up (global warming). Carbon dioxide not only greenhouse gas, others include methane and water vapour.
What are the effects of global warming?
Climate change Polar ice caps melt Sea levels will rise Increased flooding Increased spread of tropical diseases
