What is an element?
Substance which contains only 1 type of atoms
What is a compound?
Substance that has atoms of 2 or more different elements chemically joined together.
What is a mixture?
2 or more substances not chemically joined.
What is a pure substance?
A single element or compound not mixed with any other substance
What is definition of soluble and insoluble?
A solid that does/doesn’t dissolve,e.g. sugar and wood
Definition of solute?
Solid that dissolves in liquid o form solution, e.g. sea water (salt)
Definition of solution?
Solvent and solute
What is distillate?
Condensed solvent collected during distillation
Definition of miscible?
2 liquids that are able to mix, e.g. Ribena + water
What are the state symbols?
S - solid
L- liquid
G- gas
Aq- aqueous solution
What is chromatography?
Used to separate mixtures of soluble substances by running solvent (mobile phase) through mixture on paper (stationary phrase), causing substances to move at different rates over paper
What is Rf value?
Rf value = Distance traveled by solute
—————————————
Distance travelled by solvent front
Acid + base —
Salt + water
How copper Sulfate crystals made? Equation?
Made from neutralising sulphuric acid with copper oxide
H2SO4 + Cu — CuSO4 + H2O
What is risk of sulfuric acid and how do we miniseries it?
Chemical burn
Dry up spills, wash skin if splashed
What is the risk of hot apparatus? How do we minimise it?
Burn, leave apparatus to cool
What is the risk of a chemical spillage? How de minimise it?
Chemical in eye, wear safety goggles
