Bonding Flashcards
What is an ionic compound?
A compound formed between a metal and non-metal in which the metal atoms transfers electrons to the non-metal atom
What is a cation?
An ion with a net positive charge, e.g. Ag+
What is an anion?
An ion with a net negative charge, e.g. Ag-
Why do ionic compounds have a high melting and boiling point?
Ionic bonds are strong, lot of energy needed to break bonds
Why are ionic compounds soluble in water?
Charged ions attracted to oxygen (-) or hydrogen (+) in water
Why do ionic compounds conduct electricity when molten or in a solution?
Ions free to move and carry charge
What is covalent bonding?
Involves sharing of pair of electrons between 2 or more non-metal atoms
What is a covalent compound?
2 or more atoms joined together by sharing electrons
What are the 7 diatonic elements?
H2 N2 O2 F2 Cl2 Br2 I2
Why do molecular covalent bonds have a low melting and boiling point?
Weak forces of attraction present between molecules are breaking
Why are molecular covalent bonds not conductors of electricity?
No charged particles
Why are molecular covalent bonds insoluble in water?
No attraction: covalent bonds don’t have charge
