Deodorant
Name a corrosive substance
Bleach
Oven cleaner
Name a toxic substance
Fertiliser
Weed killer
Name a substance of caution
Fairy liquid

What is the purpose of a hazard symbol? Explain the benefits
It has greater visual impact than words, you can take necessary safety precautions
It is universal in all languages , you can treat injuries quickly
What is an indicator?
Dye which changes colour depending on whether solution it is added to is acid or alkali
What colour does litmus paper go in acid , then alkali?
Red
Blue
What colour does universal indicator go in acid or alkali?
Range of colours
Give an example of 2 strong acids
Hydrochloric acid
Sulfuric acid
Example of 2 weak acids
Ethanoic acid
Citric
Name 2 strong alkalis
Potassium hydroxide
Sodium hydroxide
Name 2 weak alkalis
Ammonia hydroxide
Sodium hydrogen carbonate
What is the method for following a neutralisation reaction by monitoring the pH?
- Add 15cm cubed of ammonia to a conical flask and place flask onto white tile
- Add 8 drops of universal indicator to the ammonia
- Record starting pH
- Add 2cm cubed of ethanoic acid using teat Pipette, stir it and record the pH
- Repeat step 4 until you reach a pH of 10 or more
- Record all results in a table
- Draw a graph of your results
How could you make the experiment more accurate?
Use a pH meter, as it would give a reading to 2 decimal places
