Organic analysis Flashcards
Name 3 analytical methods used to find the structure of complex molecules.
NMR Spectroscopy
Infrared Spectroscopy
Mass Spectrometry
Why can NMR only be used on atoms with odd mass numbers (13C, 1H)?
These have the property spin, which is used in measuring the resonance of the atoms.
Testing for an alkene
Shake with bromine water
Red brown colour should disappear
Testing for halogenoalkane
1) add warm NaOH (aq)
2) acidify with HNO3
3) add AgNO3 (aq)
Precipitate of silver halogen forms
Testing for alcohol
Add acidified potassium dichromate
Orange colours turns green
Testing for aldehyde
Warm with Fehling’s/Tollens solution or add acidified potassium dichromate
Blue turns red
Silver mirror forms
Orange goes green
Testing for a carboxylic acid
Add NaHCO3 (aq) Bubbles form as CO2 is given off
If the compound is acidic?
Carboxylic acid
Is the compound is solid
Suggest long carbon chain or ionic bonding
If compound is liquid
Suggests medium length carbon chair
Or polar
Or hydrogen bonding
If compound is gas
Suggests short carbon chain
Little to no polarity
Does compound dissolve in water
Suggests polar groups
Does compound not dissolve in water
Suggests non polar groups
Does compound burn with smoky flame
Suggests high C:H ratio, possibly aromatic
Does compound burn with non smoky flame
Suggests low C:H ratio
Probably non-aromatic
