Organelles Flashcards
cell membrane
outer boundary, surrounds cell
Organelle
Structures that carry out specific functions
cytoplasm
fluid in cell-feels like jello
colloid
not solid, not liquid, like jelo
ribosomes
tiny, dot like structures used to make proteins
nucleus
control center with DNA
nucleolus
inside nucleus, ribosomes made
nuclear envelope
surrounds nucleus, has pores
endoplasmic structure
E.R., internal canal, used to transport, some have no ribosomes (smooth E.R.), some have ribosomes (rough E.R.)
golgi apparatus
flattened sac, sorts & packages, vesicles move from E.R. to Golgi & fuse with membranes
lysosomes
vesicles that contain enzymes to break down larger molecules, digest old organelles
cytoskeleton
web of protein used for support
microfilaments - long and thin
microtubules - thick and hollow
mitochondria
makes energy, looked like peanut with folds on inside, powerhouse of cell
vacuole
membrane bound compartment to store things like water, food vacuoles can fuse with lysomes to digest the food
plastids
also stores, can contain pigments
chloroplast - in plants, used to capture sun’s energ, has chlorophyll
amyloplast - store starch
