Organelles Flashcards
Nucleus’s
Considered brain of the cell as it directs the function of the cell, contains the DNA material
Cell membrane
Surrounds and protects contents of cell
Gatekeeper of the cell as it controls what moves in and out of a cell. It is considered to be semi-permeable Made from a phospholipid bilayer with carrier proteins.
Cell wall
Provide structure and strength for plant cell
Made of cellulose
Cytoplasm
Jelly-like salt watery fluid in which organelles float
Helps to distribute food and oxygen to different parts of cell
Chloroplasts
Contain chlorophyll, where photosynthesis occurs
Found only in plant cells or plant like organisms (not animals)
Cytoskeleton
Helps maintain shape and provide strength while helping distribute particles around cell
RER
Has ribosomes attached to outside
Makes proteins
SER
Make fats (lipids)
Golgi apparatus (Golgi Body)
Packaging place to help process and package lipids but especially proteins
Mitochondria
the powerhouse of the cell as it produces energy for the cell
Ribosomes
Free ribosomes float in cytoplasm while other ribosomes are found on RER
Ribosomes make proteins
Lysosomes
Break down waste materials in cells
Lysosomes
Break down waste materials in cells
Valcules
Storage containers for food & wastes,, Larger in plants (largest organelle) than animals
Prokaryotes
Prokaryotes - do not have a true nucleus, have dna material but not bound in nucleus (monerans)
